Staying Cool This Summer in Nelson

Notice to Public

STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER IN NELSON

The City of Nelson, in partnership with the Regional District of Central Kootenay(RDCK), has made the difficult decision to keep the Gyro Park pool closed for the 2021 season.

The main factors in this decision are related to the current Public Health Orders (PHO) from the Province, which do not permit drop-in access. These orders require users to pre-book a facility for use, and Gyro Park pool does not have a booking system. The PHO booking requirement would only allow for one hour of attendance.  These bookings would require extra sanitization between each session.

If there were a sudden change to the PHOs related to bookings, it is important to understand that hiring, training and scheduling staff for the pool is a significant undertaking and that preparations for the pool itself can take up to 4 weeks.  We cannot open the pool overnight, and given the short two-month season, it is just not feasible for this year.

We know this is not an ideal situation, but there are still some great places for the kids to cool off and take a dip this summer. Both Lakeside Park Beach and Spray Park at Lions Park are open for the summer.  The Spray Park hours have also been extended from 10:00am – 8:00pm.

Plus,  the pool at the NDCC remains open and can be booked for regular swimming blocks and swim lessons.

For more information on the NDCC swimming pool, please visit: https://www.rdck.ca/EN/main/services/recreation/complexes-facilities/nelson-district-community-complex.html\

We thank you for your patience and we hope to see you all back at Gyro pool in 2022.
