This past week, the portion of the Great Northern Trail, south of Mountain Station parking lot was completed, including placement of a paver-laid gravel surface. Other than some minor works that may occur over the next few months, the trail work on this portion is complete and further closures or detours are not anticipated. A couple hundred meter section of the trail north of the parking lot is currently open, however closures of this section are anticipated in mid-August as work will resume near the intersection of the trail and the Hoover Street Right-of-Way.
The construction crew is currently working near the Mountain Station water treatment facility installing pipe adjacent the reservoir. Once the reservoir works are complete, the crew will return to the Great Northern Trail to finish the portion of the trail north of the parking lot. The works adjacent the reservoir are substantial and the area will be extremely busy over the next couple of months.
In addition to the City of Nelson contractors working on the water infrastructure, both Telus and Nelson Hydro will be working periodically on their infrastructure along the Hoover Right-of-Way and adjacent Mountain Station reservoir as well. Detours or closures of the roads or trails near the reservoir are not anticipated; however, the area at the top of Mountain Road will often be occupied with construction equipment. Temporary construction fencing is erected around the work zone at the reservoir. Please be mindful of the construction zones, traffic control personnel and all construction signage.
