[ARCHIVED] November 2, 2018 - UPDATE #45 - Hall Street Project - Phase II

Hall Street Project Update November 3 -10, 2018

As the project nears a close, both prime contractors are maintaining an eye on the weather. Both contractors are preparing for paving and sidewalk works, both critical facets of the job, requiring a weather window where conditions are favourable, especially for paving. The contractors anticipate being prepped and ready for pavement by Monday, November 5th. After this date, the paving sub-contractor, Selkirk Paving Limited, is poised to mobilize and pave with the exact timing dependent on an appropriate weather window.

This past week, McNally Excavating continued to focus efforts primarily on the east side of the parking lot at the foot of Hall Street. The focus next week, is much the same, where they will finish the final section of curb, extending out of the parking lot to tie into Lakeside Drive near the recently relocated tram shelter. The last of the shallow utility infrastructure is installed and focus will be to get the east side of the lot prepped and paved. The landscaping crew continues to install plants, trees and shrubs, as well as lay paving stones. The large concrete slab at the SW corner of the Prestige banquet wing at the parking lot access is sufficiently cured to allow vehicle traffic, and will be the detour route to the wharf and boathouses while the access to Lakeside Drive is completed. Access to the parking lot will be difficult at times, as only one of the two access points to the lot will be open. Closure of the parking lot accesses will be intermittent; however one access will remain open at all times. McNally will erect detour and custom signage to direct pedestrians and vehicles through the construction zone while working on the accesses.

Marwest Industries, working to the south side of the intersection at Hall and Front Street, have completed both the deep and shallow utility infrastructure work. The third party shallow utility works, including Telus and Fortis Gas are complete, and irrigation works are nearing completion as well. The traffic signals at the intersection have been installed, tested, and bagged, ready for use. The street lights are energized and in use in the intersection and additional street lights are to be installed November 6th. The curbing is nearing completion and the 200 block of Hall Street should be ready for pavement by Monday November 5. The east access to the West Arm Plaza will remain closed, but is the priority for upcoming concrete works. The focus is to get this paved, followed by concrete placement at the access to West Arm Plaza and sidewalk on the east side of Hall Street, past the Chamber of Mines building.

Speed readers have been installed on Front Street on either side of Marwest’s worksite to remind motorists that the speed limit in the construction zone is 30 km/h. The City also requests that drivers and pedestrians utilize caution while traveling through this busy area and to follow the signs and direction provided by the flaggers.
