Purpose
The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to;
a) Manage problem vegetation and noxious weeds on right-of-way transmission corridors, distribution networks, and their access roads within the Nelson Hydro service area. The PMP applies to areas located within the Central Kootenay Regional District,
b) To control wood rot, wood pests and mechanical damage to Nelson Hydro wood poles within the Nelson Hydro service area, and
c) Manage problem vegetation and noxious weeds on Nelson Hydro facilities within their service area including within generating stations, switching stations, substations, pole yards, and around concrete dams, penstocks, spillways and diversion channels, and around buildings and structures. All facilities are fenced compounds that have physically restricted access. The PMP applies to areas located within the vicinity of the communities of Nelson, Blewett, Taghum, North Shore, Harrop, Procter, Balfour and Queen’s Bay.
Methods
The NELSON HYDRO RIGHTS-OF-WAY PMP 2020 pest management methods proposed for use include manual, mechanical, cultural, and biological control, and the use of herbicides within the area to which the PMP applies. The common name and examples of the trade names of the herbicides proposed for use under this plan include: dicamba (Vanquish), glyphosate (Vantage Plus Max), and triclopyr (Garlon XRT). Selective application methods include: wick/wipe-on, injection, squirt bottle, cut surface, and foliar applications using backpack or handgun (power hose and nozzle).
The NELSON HYDRO WOOD POLE PMP 2020 pest management methods proposed for use include stubbing (non-chemical), pole replacement (non-chemical), insecticide use for ant control, and the use of wood preservative pesticides. The use of pesticides is intended within the area to which the PMP applies. The common name and examples of the trade names of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: bendiocarb (Ficam), copper naphthenate (CU-Nap), sodium fluoride + copper naphthenate (Cop-R- Plastic), copper naphthenate + borax (CuRap 20), metam sodium (Woodfume), disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (Tim-Bor Professional), disodium octaborate (Impel Rods II), and disodium octaborate + boric acid (CobraRod). Application methods include: external bandages, internal liquid injection, internal rod placement and low-pressure backpack sprayer.
